The Duality of a Ghost (2018)

ARTIST STATEMENT

Struggling with identity is something that doesn't have one definitive answer; And, in all honesty, I don't have that to offer my audience. All I have is my ability to share my own experience of being bi-ethnic, and the influence that it has had on my sense of identity. In "The Duality of a Ghost", I utilize fictional "creatures" (for lack of a better word) to represent different types of people in order to separate any preconceived racial stereotypes or notions that the reader may have. As for my colors, I elected to use a simplified palette — dark backgrounds to allude to uncertainty, fear, or vulnerability, and use a lighter blue to allude to a sense of privilege, safety, or comfort.

The piece was heavily inspired by Thi Bui's The Best We Could Do, as well as Art Spiegelman's Maus. By telling my family's story, I am better able to get ahold of where I stand and how I fit into the mix of the universe. Although I am still figuring things out myself, and that we should be reminded of the danger of a single story, I hope that this creative piece gives insight to those who may not consider perspectives as such on a day to day basis.
